While character design by artist has a basic energy consumption for software use and electricity usage they are not contributing to the environments breakdown more than the average person, the issue comes through when companies and people are using ai to generate character concepts. Not only does this have a moral issue as it is taking jobs away from artists and encouraging direct plagiarism of individuals work. but also has a huge global impact on the environment as using ai is demanding and requires a significantly large amount of energy to develop ai imagery, this means there has to be more electricity consumption as well as more water usage to cool the hardware that is being used to develop ai’s learning system, It is estimated that globally the technology used to generate images uses more water than the entire country of Denmark. According to scientists the required amount of power north America data centres have has increased from 2688 Megawatts (in 2022) to 5341 megawatts (in 2023), in just a year the usage of ai has contributed to global electricity consumption extremely quickly and is demanding for more data centres to be built in America to accommodate the growing demand for ai in industry. Building data companies, as well as electricity in order to sustain ai mainly comes from burning fossil fuels to create energy which according to the united nations are the biggest by far contributor to global warming.

Today there has been a large number of people creating ai images instead of commissioning artists and the trend of ai going viral has been growing constantly. In 2024 a list of 16,000 artists were released and were revealed that ai company midjourny had been using there images to train there software to be able to recreate their works without consent. This is directly violating copyright and in the uk unless discussed otherwise the artist has the immediately claim to there work so by ai disregarding this it is directly harming artists. Recently a clip Hayao Miyazaki creator of studio Ghibli after watching a clip of of animation created using ai technology was quoted saying how ai is “an insult to life itself”.
