The job of a character designer is to work back and forth with writers and directors to create a character that will fulfil a role in a film or comic. the role of a designer is to complete their own personal research into styles, shapes , colours and genre inspired by what the directors/writers suggest in order to develop a wide range of potential ideas that will be whittled down and then chosen as a final outcome. A character creator must be open to experimentation and exploration. A typical brief for someone in this job would involve being given a basic rundown of personality traits, there role in the story, and maybe a few important features the writers request, these briefs can be in depth or quite vague it is then the designers job to trial multiple outcomes constantly referencing there brief while receiving feedback from other teams.
Timescales for creating characters vary, character designers have to have time to experiment implement feedback than make a final reference sheet, that has to be thorough in order for story boarders and animators to keep a consistent final outcome. There a few sources online for exact time scales but according to ‘Kevuru games’ 3D modelled character can take between 15-30 days while a 2D character can take between 5-10 days to complete. A Lot of designers work freelance and rely on a built portfolio and word of mouth to create connections in the industry to be hired by bigger companies like Disney, Netflix, DreamWorks (for animation), publication houses like penguin and even game companies such as beautiful glitch.
